This is pretty funny:
Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions.
King apparently didn't get the memo that bringing guns to political events is the highest form of patriotism. King has angered the NRA by supporting gun-control provisions before, but to my knowledge, he's only done so in the context of preventing sales to people on terrorist "watch lists" who haven't actually been convicted of anything yet.
I doubt that the incident in Arizona would have been avoided if it had been illegal to carry a gun within a thousand feet of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, since killing people is also illegal. It's somewhat startling that King's first instinct in the aftermath of a shooting that killed several people who were not government officials is to protect himself.
