Marc Ambinder defines it:
the more economically secure you feel, the more likely you are to back John McCain. The more financially squeezed you feel, the more likely you are to back Barack Obama. According to a fascinating new Los Angeles Times-Bloomberg poll, of the 50% of Americans who feel economically insecure, 60% of them back Barack Obama. Just 21% back McCain; the rest are undecided or don't know. This, incidentally, isn't particularly new. As Andrew Gelman argues in his book "Red State, Blue State, Rich State, Poor State: Why Americans Vote the Way They Do," it's long been the case that poor voters go for Democrats while the rich swing towards Republicans. Economic insecurity provokes extremely similar feelings to being poor -- not to mention is centered among people who are actually low-income, and thus less secure -- so it's no surprise that it produces a move towards the Democrats.
