Via TPM, it looks like trouble for Chris Shays as $300,000 has disappeared from his campaign's accounts and his manager, Michael Sohn, has been subpoenaed. Apparently, people think Sohn has gambled away some of the money. I had a chance to speak to Sohn a few times over the course of the campaign for various stories, and was always surprised by his, well, partisanship. Obviously he's a campaign operative, but he came up through Shays' moderate operation, and it fascinated me when he would talk about his boss' ability to bring together people in a bipartisan way in one breath and in the next refer to the "Democrat" party -- not something I often hear outside the south -- and its "Tom Delay tactics." A bit of McCainitis? Part of his resentment probably stems from the Democrats' ultimately successful -- and rather personal -- six-year effort to drive Shays out of his seat. Shays only lost by three points, and now he and his staff have to be wondering whether that $300,000 could have put him over the top. --Tim Fernholz P.S.
