The Economist has a nice rundown of various experimental weapons that will usher us into the age of ray guns and laser artillery. Most of the projects are defensive, but in part, that's because the military is squeamish abut its offensive concepts. "The public may have misgivings about a silent and invisible weapon that would boil the body’s fluids before tearing it apart in a burst of vapour," the article notes. On the other hand, being incinerated by incendiary weapons are punctured by armor-piercing rounds isn't exactly a picnic, either.
