- It's worth pointing out that the sentiment expressed by this Republican candidate for Congress, who says self-reliant individuals are personally responsible for making sure their eggs do not contain salmonella, is the logical endgame when you make a fetish out of "limited government." Ironically, the plethora of colorful candidates running for Congress this cycle could enable a more substantive discussion of public policy, since they're so willing to talk about eliminating popular government programs like food inspection.
- It's not clear The Weekly Standard knows that P.J. O'Rourke is a satirist, but they nonetheless gave him space to write a funny piece on how the Democrats are "drunk on power" and they "hate our guts." Indeed, would-be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell more pithily expressed this nihilism today, noting that "the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." I don't put much stock in arguments that say Obama would fare better with a foil in Congress, but at least the public is going to be reminded what life under Republican rule is like.
- Speaking of life under Republican rule, it's a testament to the public's sour mood that Republicans can get away with running for office on absolutely no platform whatsoever. "We're going to cut government spending," they say. Question: "Well, what specifically are you going to cut?" Answer: "I don't really know, but something is going to be cut!"
- Weekend Remainders: Democrats the party can do without, Mississippi edition; a sneak peek at some of the enlightened souls who will be running the 112th Congress; and doesn't E.J. Dionne know it's impolitic to refer to Fox News as "a Republican propaganda network?"
