- In a story that continues to reverberate, the Politico reported on Saturday that Mike Huckabee once suggested people with AIDS should be quarantined -- not very likable. The Huckabee campaign managed to outdo it's own past failures at damage control by arguing about whether he'd advocated quarantine or just strongly hinted at that position. It's as if he responded to a charge that he supported the murder of illegal immigrants by saying that he only pointed out that we kill anyone who tries to invade the country -- the point of the statement is clear.
- In other Huckabee news, an interview in GQ makes him look a bit disingenuous. He claims he's gotten more scrutiny for his religion than Romney, that civil unions are unnecessary because of the possibility of powers of attorney, and that creationism should be taught in schools alongside evolution. Also he picks the Rolling Stones over the Beatles (blasphemy!).
- Speaking of insufficient scrutiny, Rudy Giuliani is refusing to sever ties to his law firm. Huckabee, of all people, pointed out in that GQ interview that Rudy isn't getting as many questions about his time as a lawyer as Huckabee is getting about his time as a minister. Hopefully this will change that.
- Over at TNR, Barron YoungSmith argues that South Carolina is where the GOP insiders, many of whom aren't friendly to Huckabee, will make their presence felt. Mysterious fliers are starting to show up and the tiny Huckabee campaign is hard-pressed to keep up.
