CNN gobble gobbled today that Gen. David Petraeus will be giving up command of the Afghanistan war for an appointment as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Experts were quoted saying his appointment may reflect "the gravitas" he could bring to the job and indicate the respect he garners in Washington. In a top-brass reshuffle by the Obama administration, the displaced director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, will now become the defence secretary.
As The New York Times reports, Petraeus is leaving his post at a time when his military strategy in Afghanistan has become strained by an unabating insurgency. Above is Petraeus aboard the USS Nimitz in 2009, carving up a Turkey.
