Earth Day goes middle-aged today, celebrating its 40th anniversary. In this photo, the late Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine addresses between 40,000 and 60,000 people on the first celebration of Earth Day in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, on April 22, 1970. Muskie was the author of the 1970 Clean Air Act.
