Yesterday would have been gay-rights activist Harvey Milk's 81st birthday. In California, where Milk became one of the first openly gay men elected to public service when he won a spot on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Gov. Jerry Brown declared Sunday "Harvey Milk Day." In Sarasota, Florida, the community celebrated the second annual Harvey Milk Festival, which showcased local art and musical talent. In Reno, Nevada, community members gathered for a candle-light vigil in Milk's honor. In San Francisco, the Trevor Project, a gay-rights organization, opened it's third national call center in Milk's former office. Milk was murdered in 1978.
