The Chevrolet Volt -- an electric car than can run on battery power for 40 miles until it goes into hybrid mode -- was named the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year today. "Maybe a bit of flag waving is warranted," judge Johnny Lieberman told the LA Times. "Toyota was the massive head starter of hybrid technology. They couldn't figure it out. Volkswagen has more engineering influence. They have no technology like this. Mercedes doesn't have it. It was only a bankrupt American company that did it."
