It's sort of an axiom of politics that all campaigns look winnable to the people inside of them. Rick Perlstein will tell you that George McGovern's aides that they had a shot in the late days of the 1972 election. John McCain is not trailing like George McGovern was. He's in striking distance. But even if the polls don't change, here is why the race looks winnable to him.
