Before he decided to sell his reputation and integrity for the presidency, McCain was a radical conservationist too, suggesting that Americans turn out their lights five minutes earlier or don't drive the extra block.
Sitting in the dark for five minutes or parking far from your home is actually significantly mire disruptive than making sure your tires are properly inflated. Of course, John McCain doesn't do any of these things. He's married to a wealthy heiress, flies in private planes, and has never worried about driving an extra block in his life. Energy costs are all abstraction to him, so when it's politically convenient to pay lip service to conservation, he does so, and when it's politically convenient to mock commuters who think it's meaningful to save $50 to $100 bucks by changing their tire pressure, he does that, too.
