The new "drug czar" is Seattle police chief Gil Kerlikowske, a progressive law enforcement type whose primary reputation is as a proponent of gun control and civil liberties. Insofar as he has much of a record on drug issues, it seems to be in context of de-emphasizing them: More on his record here. Harold Pollack and Mark Kleiman offer some advice for how to handle the drug war here. Seems like a good choice, but the broader reality is that it's long past time we eliminated the position of drug czar altogether.
