Matthew Yglesias has a handy chart showing the changes in Washington D.C'.s demographics:
I think this helps explain some of the recent racial tensions associated with D.C.'s last mayoral election, which are something of a rough inverse of the national political dynamic, where the country as a whole is becoming less white. As Ezra Klein noted earlier this week, voting is more racially polarized than ever in the Obama era. Republicans are increasingly reliant on inflaming the racial anxieties of white voters to win a larger half of the electorate while Democrats win elections by mobilizing nonwhites.
So if you think last year was bad, just wait and see what happens when the first viable white candidate runs for mayor of D.C.
