The results of a Pew study showing that the global Muslim population is going to increase before leveling off sometime after 2030 are likely to provoke at least a small right-wing freak-out, because they show the population of U.S. Muslims more than doubling:
In the United States, for example, the population projections show the number of Muslims more than doubling over the next two decades, rising from 2.6 million in 2010 to 6.2 million in 2030, in large part because of immigration and higher-than-average fertility among Muslims. The Muslim share of the U.S. population (adults and children) is projected to grow from 0.8% in 2010 to 1.7% in 2030, making Muslims roughly as numerous as Jews or Episcopalians are in the United States today.
Of course, twice as many Muslims as we have now still means that Muslims are only 1.7 percent of the population. The idea that said 1.7 percent would somehow be capable of exerting its will over the other 98 percent of Americans by forcing them to adhere to Sharia law is still really ridiculous. Unless you're the type of person who believes in shadowy elites from Semitic religions exerting widespread control over governments from behind the scenes and oh look, this is starting to sound familiar.
