I've been a Nintendo guy all my life. NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube --- the whole crew. Every time the system's go through their quadrennial upgrades, I tell myself I'll try a new flavor, I won't be left out in the cold when the developers cease supporting whatever moronic format (cartridge! tiny disc!) Nintendo came up with that week. And every time, I'm lured back. And so it will be with the Nintendo Wii, which in addition to being deeply underpowered compared with its competitors, also boasts the Segway of controllers. But I know I'll be there, particularly given the system's support for old SNES games. Nothing was ever as good as the SNES. So I'm interested by Tommy's argument that the Wii will actually be successful, as the graphical arms race of Sony and Microsoft are making games prohibitively expensive to develop, while Nintendo's entry allows for both freshness and relative economy.
On the other hand, Joystiq overheard an EA developer musing that "a large portion of game developers really hope Wii can do well. [The console] is an excellent chance for artists, designers, and creators to move gaming forward. However, the console does pose a higher risk to development companies and publishers that are trying to turn a profit." What do you guys think?
