Generally, the sensible center isn't very sensible, because folks occupying that space are doing so by arbitrarily balancing themselves between two perceived ideological extremes, not genuinely considering the facts at hand.
Ben Wittes, Jack Goldsmith, and Robert Chesney's new blog, Lawfare, on the intersection of law and national security, though, looks pretty promising. Wittes has been writing thoughtful stuff on terrorism and legal matters for some time now, Goldsmith is the former head of the Bush-era Office of Legal Counsel, and Chesney recently served on the Obama administration's detainee task force.
Civil libertarians in particular should be interested in what these guys have to say, whether you agree with them or not. Look at it this way: The world would be a better place if Republicans were reading these guys instead of Andy McCarthy.
