I sort of the The Onion's view of Rick Hertzberg's dream scenario in which Obama and McCain promise to make the loser vice-president. Without getting into substantive, bureaucratic, or ideological objections (but believe me, I've got those), here's a very basic concern: If you're worried about a polity that's growing dangerously polarized, what you don't want to do is set up a situation where a single extremist from the losing side can reverse the judgment of the country.
