OBAMA ANSWERS THE NYT. Proving once again that he's got the fastest media operation in the race, Barack Obama has already gotten The New York Times to publish a second story following up on its front-pager this morning, in which he explains his finances at length -- "At no point did I know" -- and also manages to demonstrate surprisingly good humor, given the topic:
Until signing the book deal, Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, have said that they were paying back law school loans and had little extra money to invest. After signing the book deal, the family purchased a $1.6 million house and began looking for other investment options.I thought about going to Warren Buffett, but I decided it would be embarrassing with only $100,000 to invest, to ask his advice, Mr. Obama said, referring to the billionaire investor who is a close adviser and supporter. This still doesn't explain why on earth a Swift Boat funder would back Obama in May 2005 -- the first piece suggesting he should run for president didn't come until the end of that year -- but the mysteries of that crew are legion.--Garance Franke-Ruta
