Andrew Sullivan calls on Obama to make a television ad opposing Proposition 8, California's anti-gay marriage ballot initiative that has been gaining polling ground in recent weeks. Citing African Americans' 20 point margin of support for the measure, Sullivan believes Obama could turn the tide. But would Obama be risking votes in swing states if he took a strong stance against Proposition 8? My sense is no -- gay marriage is generally less of a driver than people assume.
By the way, Obama has already come out against Proposition 8 on the grounds that he opposes "all divisive and discriminatory constitutional amendments." But Sullivan is right; he hasn't been very public about it.
