I highly recommend bossman Harold Meyerson's column today, in which he fits Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama into the old beer track/wine track classification of Democratic politicians. In other words, Clinton appeals to older people, party loyalists, working class and union folks, and those concerned primarily about the economy. Obama is popular among young people, independents, the more educated, and the affluent. In the past, the African American community has supported beer trackers. But, as Harold writes, unlike past wine-trackers such as Howard Dean and Paul Tsongas, Obama has the ability to expand the reformer appeal through African American support. Nationwide, that could tip him to victory, although of course, the disproportionately white early primary states are almost uniquely suited to challenge him. All the more extraordinary that he pulled off an Iowa win. --Dana Goldstein
