Palin got bad coverage because she simultaneously came off like a blithering idiot and was running to serve as the Vice President of the United States of America. Generally speaking, you're only allowed to do one of those things at a time. Indeed, her comparison with Caroline Kennedy is actually instructive. When Kennedy emerged on the scene, she, like Palin, received rather glowing press coverage. Then she began giving inarticulate, defensive interviews. Then her press coverage got worse. That's how these things work.
