Our commenters have asked me to elaborate on why I called John Edwards' new Plants for Hillary website a "silly ploy." It isn't out of opposition to any of the particular questions Edwards asks Clinton to respond to on the site -- although it's easy enough to imagine all the counter-arguments from the Hillary camp (ex; "I get more lobbying money than other candidates because I'm the most likely to be the next president."). Nevertheless, I believe it's wise for the Edwards campaign to highlight the differences between the two candidates on issues such as the probable influence of lobbyists in future health care reform. Yet it's strange to watch Edwards, who wants to be seen a serious, front-running presidential contender, launch a satirical website in response to such a minor incident in the campaign cycle. It doesn't look presidential. Granted, most voters will never hear of or see "Plants for Hillary"; this is a media strategy. But to this member of the media, at least, one who's been repeatedly impressed by Edwards' domestic policy proposals, it's beginning to look like "attack!" is becoming an M.O. Edwards can't break out of. --Dana Goldstein
