ON POISON PILLS. Some think the Dorgan amendment is an attempt to kill the bill. That's not what I'm hearing. What you may see is some vote-shuffling, as certain Republicans phase out of support and certain pro-labor Democrats phase in. There are attempts, in other words, to change the coalition so it tilts a little further left than it currently does. These could, of course, fail, but most folks seem to think the bill is headed towards passage, and what's going on now is angling for advantage and position in advance of the conference committee. --Ezra Klein
