Funny how on the day that President Obama and a bunch of other Democrats cozy up with fundamentalists at the National Prayer Breakfast, the religious right is accusing Democrats of "declaring war on prayer."
Kyle at Right Wing Watch has the scoop. Basically the lowdown is that religious right uber-barrister Jay Sekulow started complaining that the House-passed stimulus package contains a provision that "discriminates" against religion, because, in keeping with established First Amendment law, it bars the use of funds to renovate and repair school and university buildings if the buildings are used primarily for a religious purpose. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-NC) has waged war on the provision, taking up Sekulow's cause with an amendment to the Senate bill that would strip out this "anti-Christian" provision. A phalanx of religious right groups, along with Fox News, have taken up the cause.
