What is the state of marriage in Washington,. D.C., a year after passing marriage-equality legislation? More than twice as strong as it used to be (via Mike Madden):
Officials don't track how many same-sex couples have married in the city, but applications for new marriage licenses more than doubled last year. In the year before same-sex couples were legally allowed to wed, there were some 3,000 applications. Last year there were some 6,500.
Conservatives often point out that two-parent families tend to be less poor than single-parent families. They've been less successful at developing public policy that addresses that problem in any constructive way. But the one proven, concrete way to ensure that more people in America get married is one they've opposed tooth and claw, to the point of stepping into the breach to defend the constitutionality of the law that prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.
