This may be a bit of an Edwards-heavy day here on the site, but I've been covering the guy for over a year. Indeed, about 11 months ago, I published a feature profile of Edwards for the magazine. I spent time with the candidate, spoke endlessly with Elizabeth, sunk slightly into the New Orleans mud where he announced his candidacy and where, today, he will end it. The final result was a profile that, once published, I worried read too much into the campaign, doubled too far down on a populism and progressivism that had been hinted at, but never really demonstrated in his career. I needn't have worried. The Edwards campaign fulfilled the promise of my article and more. Over the last few months, Edwards has been saying, "this is a fight I've been preparing for all my life." I never liked the line: It grated on me, asserted too much and explained too little. But it's what my profile was about and, to be honest, I think it was true.
