Incidentally, I'm with Atrios on immigration being an intrinsically good thing, because, as he writes, "cultural homogeneity is a bad thing as it tends to be self-reinforcing with homogeneity leading to increasing conformism. I think this country would be a much less interesting place without the recent immigration boom, which followed decades of historically low levels of immigration." Agreed. It would also be a much less delicious place, and while I don't mention this much, I'm basically willing to fall in line behind any and every policy proposal that will bring better ethnic food to Washington, DC. If there were some provision in the compromise bill that would airlift 50 burrito carts and 75 taco stands from Mexico City into the District, that would be the end of my doubts about the plan.
