Jonah Goldberg is wondering where all the Democratic realists are on the Armenian genocide resolution. So far as I can tell, they're everywhere. Hell, Tapped published Alex Rossmiller on the subject on Friday, making a near-purely realist case against the legislative move. And I'll go even farther: This was a massive failure on Nancy Pelosi's part. Once a bill like this is on the floor, it's up to individual congress-types to vote their conscience. So far as I can tell, the Armenian genocide was a genocide, and to deny it for political reasons would be unconscionable. That said, it's the Leadership's job to keep bills like this one from coming to the floor -- just because you wouldn't deny the existence of the Armenian genocide, doesn't mean it's necessary to pass a Congressional condemning a century-old event. Indeed, I have no idea why it's even the US Congress's place to be commenting on foreign crimes conducted during the early 20th century. There's no good argument for this piece of legislation's existence, just as there would've been no good argument for individual representatives to vote against it. That it came to the floor at all was either a show of incompetence, interest group capture, or spectacularly bad judgment. --Ezra Klein
