I haven't blogged much about the alleged terrorist plot involving the Hutaree Christian Militia, but it's been weird to watch right-wing bloggers either defend the group preemptively or allege some sort of government conspiracy related to their arrest. You wouldn't actually assume that violent, anti-government extremists would have much in common with your garden-variety Republican until ... you see Republicans instinctively defending them.
At any rate, here's some right-wing conspiracy fodder for you from New America's Andrew Lebovich. The member of local rival Michigan Militia, Matt Savino, who called the state police when one of the Hutaree came to him for help while fleeing the law, is a convert to Islam:
The strict Christian dogma espoused by the Hutaree does not fly as well these days either, at least in Adrian militia circles. Mr. Savino said that he converted to Islam in the late 1990s after a soul-searching separation from the Lutheran faith he had grown up with, and that he believed that he was the only Muslim in the militia.
Go ahead, guys. Get your chalkboards out.
