My Spanish is pretty decent, but not good enough to pick up everything in the rapid-fire, simultaneous translation at last night's Univision debate. There was one point where Mitt Romney gave some backward answer to the question of why Latinos are abandoning the Republican Party, but I didn't get the full quote. Migra Matters has the full transcript up today in English:
You know, I think Republicans went to Washington with the expectations of the whole world that we would change Washington. And in many respects, as has been said by many people, Washington changed Republicans. And when Republicans act like Democrats, America loses. Republicans spent too much money, and we let down our ethical standards. And so, Hispanics, along with other people in this country, want to see change. The Republican Party can connect with Hispanic voters, like other Americans, because there are some peculiar connections between our party and the Hispanic people.
Democrats are doing better with Latino voters because Republicans are acting like Democrats. And Latinos don't like Democrats. Except for ... when they do.
