SOUTHERN LIVING. Sometimes we forget about Hillary Clinton's years in Arkansas. But the new Time magazine poll that shows she is crushing Barack Obama in the South, the region where she spent much of her adult life, should make us remember. Race and her greater appeal to party moderates than to liberals probably are factors in this region, too. Still, this poll bodes ill for Southerner John Edwards, who really should be able to do at least as well in the South, his region, as Obama is in the Midwest. Instead, Clinton has the lead on him in his region -- because it is also hers.
Clinton's strongest regions were the Northeast, where she holds a 42%-20% advantage over Obama; and the South, where she has a 42-19 lead. They are head-to-head in the West; and Obama leads Clinton in the Midwest, 31-28.This is especially interesting because this poll comes after the shift in African-American support from Clinton to Obama, and the majority of African-Americans live in the South. Also intriguing is Edwards' complete lack of support in the Northeast, where he draws only 2 percent support, as compared to 15 percent in the Midwest, where he, like Obama, is strongest.
