SPIDER HOLE OF DENIAL. Republicans' sweaty desperation for an acceptable presidential nominee continues, and thus Fred Thompson Fever builds and builds and bulds. Mike Allen reports that Thompson "has moved beyond pondering a bid for the White House and begun assembling the nucleus of a campaign should he decide to run." As one advisor puts it, "he is getting more serious every day." It's all a bit sad -- sad, but also funny. I wan't particularly impressed by Thompson's prospects or potential as a candidate anyway, and that was before reading in Allen's piece that he would emphasize on the campaign trail his willingness to tackle such tough issues as "the entitlement crisis."
