Tim Dickinson's aggressively critical profile of McCain starts out with the most brutal lead I've ever read in a major magazine piece. How the hell did Dickinson get that quote? Update: Having now finished the piece, my sense is it goes too far. As negative an opinion as I have of McCain, it's pretty clear his career has not been this one-sided. It's not the case that everyone who has ever met the man hates his guts and thinks him scum. In a way, the article works better as an effort to expand the Overton window dictating what can be said, and criticized, about John McCain than it does as a profile. Kathy G., however, disagrees, and has some posts outlining what's useful about the piece here.
