The inimitable Mark Schmitt has a characteristically trenchant analysis of the GOP's 2008 field up. I somewhat disagree with him on both McCain and Romney, thinking both to be more palatable to a splintered and frightened Republican base than he does, but I like where he ends up, musing over the potential resonance of Newt Gingrich. I'm a big believer that Newt's chances are being undersold and he's poised to play something of a conquering hero role to the disaffected, exhausted conservatives bloc. It's a point I made in some detail in this piece I wrote on, you guessed it, Newt Gingrich's 2008 chances. And I'm even going to plug it! Now that's synergy, baby.
