The fight over the bill passed in the House that would dramatically cut spending for the rest of the year is moving to the Senate, and Politico reports that the bill's almost certain failure could produce compromise after. So far, "cutting spending" is the only political acceptable way to talk about deficit control, but that may be changing.

Whether Democrats are going to really push for higher taxes for the wealthy, as polls show most Americans want, remains an open question. But if Schumer can really "reset" the debate, as he says he wants, that would be enough of an accomplishment on its own.
