I suppose we'd all be better off if more of us -- especially our elected leaders -- gave the economic crisis more thought in the middle of the night. But this new Hillary Clinton TV ad, which uses the "3 a.m., phone ringing" trope to critique John McCain on the economy, is really just stunningly ineffective.
Sure, it's nice to see Clinton attacking McCain instead of Barack Obama. But to me, there's very little beef here. The image of the child sleeping in bed is more suited to terrorism fear mongering than economic fear mongering. And perhaps candidates should be telling voters that the economic downturn is about more than just the mortgage crisis; increasing college tuition costs, stagnating wages, and rising inequality all belong in the conversation.
