So long as I'm thinking about behemoth corporations today, here's a question: Why do American companies make such bad cars? I realize they're weighed down on health care costs, but even if the government lifted those, their autos would still be less reliable, less efficient, and lower quality than those made both in Europe and Asia. It makes perfect sense that the companies are dying, the free market is totally rational in gutting them. But there's gotta be a reason GM and Ford can't step up the quality. Toyota and Honda have been churning out weirdly well-made products for decades now, the technology exists. There must be a structural reason American companies aren't taking advantage of it.
