Yglesias notes that the Bush Administration is giving Israel massive security guarantees to make them accept our arms sales to the Saudis, just as the Saudis are supporting what appear to be Sunni insurgent groups:
Putting this all together, we're going to give Israel billions ofdollars in bribes in order to get them to not object to our decision tosell huge quantities of advanced weaponry to a country that is armingthe people we're fighting in Iraq. Makes sense to me!
It isn't the first time that Bush Administration foreign policy has looked like a Rube Goldberg machine gone haywire, using its complex mechanisms to smash itself to bits. I suppose it looks a lot more efficient if you regard enriching defense contractors and pointing bigger weapons at Palestinians as its function.
