To expand on Tom's comments here, you really can't blame McAulliffe for the financial troubles of Clinton campaign. He has been an extraordinary fundraiser. Indeed, the Clinton campaign has pulled in an astonishing amount of money; more, by far, than any previous Democratic primary campaign, and more, by far, than any of the Republican campaigns. There only problem is that Obama has raised even more than that. Over the course of this election, Obama's model of high volume, low dollar contributions has been proved decisively superior to his model of low volume, high dollar contributions. Over the past 24 hours, for instance, the Obama campaign pulled in nearly $6 million. That's simply impossible to do by calling rich people. You can't call that many rich people fast enough. And this lesson is, by far, the most revolutionary and important facet of the Obama campaign. The fact that they've proven small donor democracy not only viable, but operationally preferable, has the potential to completely change the way campaigns are run, and do so much for the better.
