Via Robert Mackey, this harrowing leaked interrogation video that appears to show an American soldier, Specialist Jeremy N. Morlock, confessing to participating in the murder of three unarmed Afghan civilians:
Morlock's lawyer says that his confession can't be trusted because he was on prescription drugs. There are four other soldiers who are accused of taking part in the alleged killings, which reportedly involved some of the soldiers who allegedly took part in the killings taking the body parts of Afghan civilians as trophies. In the interview, Morlock puts the responsibility for the killings on one of the other soldiers implicated, Staff Sergeant Calvin R. Gibbs, who Morlock says asked him at one point, "You want to wax this guy or what?"
There are reportedly photographs of the accused posing with the corpses of their alleged victims, and they may be used as evidence in the case although they won't be disclosed publicly, so we won't see them unless they're leaked. Last year Congress passed an administration supported law that allows the secretary of defense to censor photos that show U.S. troops abusing "individuals engaged, captured, or detained" by the U.S. military, but it only applied to photographs taken before January of 2009. I suspect they'll come out eventually.
The good news for the accused is that if any of them are ultimately acquitted, they'll be prime recruits for the Republican Party if they ever want to run for office.
