David Leonhardt tells us that Larry Summers is a really smart guy. If that's true, then why can't he figure out that if we removed the barriers to international competition in highly paid professional services (e.g. doctors, lawyers, accountants and economists), we can have both globalization and greater equality. It seems pretty simple to me. If there is a problem with this story, it's due to the political power of Mr. Summers' protectionist friends. It is not an economic problem.
