Frequently Asked Questions

Logging in, membership, and your account

How do I stop the pop-up windows asking me to log in?

By simply entering your email address to sign up for a newsletter from The American Prospect. Once you enter your email, you won’t see the popup again on your current device. Or you can continue to X out at the top of each popup to clear it.

Do I have to pay?

No, payment is optional. The Prospect website does not have a paywall.

But by sharing your email address with us you are joining our community, and the Prospect depends on support from readers like you to do the work that we do.

Why should I become a member?

The Prospect team needs your support to report and publish high-quality, in-depth, fact-checked journalism. As part of our community, you can receive our bimonthly print magazine, our daily and weekly newsletters, invitations to live and virtual events, and more. You can sign up here.

I’m a paying member: where do I log in?

You can log in to access services, such as updating your newsletter preferences or changing your payment method, by clicking the My Account link at the top right of any page. Once you click on the service you require, you will be asked to enter your email address—follow the instructions from there.

Do I need a password to access my account?

The Prospect is now using Stripe to process membership payments and activity. Stripe’s Customer Portal (link) does not use passwords, rather when you enter your email address, you will receive an email with an authentication link to access your payment account.

Do I have to log in every time I visit the site?

No. Once you have logged into a specific browser using a specific email address on a specific device, you will remain logged in unless your privacy settings clear your history, or if you clear your history or cache manually.

If you access our site using different browsers, including in-app browsers, and on different devices (laptop, phone, tablet), you will need to log in individually on each different browser and device. Make sure you use the same email address, as that is the “unique identifier” for your membership.

If you’re not a registered member, you will see pop-up windows asking you to do so.

If you’ve still got a question about logging in, please ask us via email at info@prospect.org.

How do I update my profile, including managing my billing information and newsletter preferences?

Paying customers can click on the My Account page to access links for the Stripe Customer Portal and other services.

I’m not getting the newsletters I signed up for. Where can I go to sort it out?

First, check your settings via the My Account page to update the newsletters you’d like to receive. If that doesn't work, check your email settings.

You may need to add "info@prospect.org" to your list of email contacts. Here's a helpful article on how to "Safelist" correspondence from the Prospect in any email service.

If you’re still having trouble, please let us know at info@prospect.org. We can look inside our email sending system to see if there’s anything else going on.

How do I sign up to become a member, or upgrade my membership level?

You can sign up through our Membership page.

Go to the Stripe Customer Portal to update your membership level.

How do I cancel my membership?

Sign in to Stripe Customer Portal and click “Cancel Plan” in your profile.
