When federal agents raided an entire apartment complex on the South Side of Chicago a few weeks ago, many talked about the cruelty of Trump’s terror campaign. Few pointed out that life in this heavily Black community was already desperate because of another set of circumstances: constantly inflating valuations of multifamily real estate (in part because of the gentrifying of the neighborhood due to Barack Obama putting his presidential center nearby) leading to disrepair in the properties.

This week on our live show, David Dayen talks to investigative editor Maureen Tkacik, who did a deep dive on the South Shore property that was raided by ICE, and the legacy of flipping, overvaluations, and sketchy appraisals that characterized the building, which led to decrepit conditions and growing incidents of violence. David and Maureen also talk about the other building decimated this week: the East Wing of the White House, destroyed by Donald Trump in a neat metaphor for what he’s done to the country for the past nine months. They look at the corporate funders of the new ballroom project that will go in the East Wing’s place.
